THUNDER BAY – Police are involved in an ongoing standoff at a house on the 1400 block of Balmoral Street

Thunder Bay Police Service spokesman Chris Adams said the initial call came in shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

“Obviously whenever we have something where we’re concerned for someone’s safety as we are in this case we’re also concerned with the public’s (safety),” Adams said. “There is a risk firearms may be involved and we have to be very cautious.”

Adams would not provide details on the nature of the initial call nor on the situation inside the home.

The police have set up their critical incident command post on scene and members of the tactical unit have been deployed.

Balmoral Street is closed between Oliver Road and Andrew Street. As well, a section of Frankwood Street between Hartland Street and Oliver Road is also closed. All of the entrances to both Riverside and St. Andrew’s Catholic cemeteries are blocked.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and neighbourhood residents who are inside their homes are being advised to not go outside.

“We really have three concerns here. We’re concerned about an individual who is involved in a standoff, we’re concerned about the safety of the neighbourhood and we’re concerned about our officers’ safety,” Adams said.
