THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Drivers now have a new avenue to make paying for parking in the city’s over 1,000 parking spots a little bit easier with the new Passport Parking Canada app.

“People can download the free app from Google Play or the App Store then they can enter their vehicle information and credit card information and pay for their parking and away you go,” said Jonathan Paske, Supervisor, Parking Authority.

“No need to plug a coin in a meter anymore; you can do it all right from your phone quickly, conveniently, and easily.”

Using an app to pay for parking, and allowing drivers to have a cashless transaction to pay for on-street metered parking aligns with the City’s new Digital Strategy, which calls for more services to be offered virtually.

“Everyone these days is looking for more digital services and this fits in with the city’s digital strategy as well, bringing more digital services to residents,” said Paske

“And everyone’s doing things on their phones these days, this is the kind of service they’re looking for.”

To further expand on the online parking service and to respond to drivers’ requests for easy payment options for parking tickets, Thunder Bay drivers can now pay their parking tickets online by visiting the parking page on the City’s website and selecting the ‘Pay a Ticket' feature.

The new mobile app also integrates enforcement data into one platform allowing the Parking Authority to analyze when specific parking zones are in highest demand.

The Passport Parking Canada app can be downloaded for free on any mobile device from the App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, drivers can enter their license plate and a specific zone number displayed on signs near parking spaces, and pay directly from their phones The app also gives drivers a reminder when their time is about to expire.
