THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District jail will be getting some relief soon as the bail beds program has officially been launched in the city.
The program is run by the John Howard Society.
It offers 20 beds to accused people who are likely homeless, suffering from addictions or mental health issues.
They are people who remain in custody because of their vulnerable situation who normally would have been granted bail.
John Howard Society executive director Kevin Haynen said the bail bed program will provide 24 hour support for these individuals.
“We have staff here 24-7 on site, so we will be looking at providing support around making sure they are able to access services when required,” Haynen said.
“We do a series of life skills, educational programs and also making appropriate referrals in the community for clients that require additional support.”
The beds will be open to both men and women. This program is a first in Ontario. Bail Beds will be launched in up to five locations across the province.
