THUNDER BAY -- Prince Arthur's Landing should have over 100 more public parking spaces for upcoming Canada Day festivities.

Construction work is done on this combined public-private parking lot on the city's waterfront, with only planter work left.

Around half of the spaces will be for public use, while the other half will be reserved for the waterfront Delta Hotel.

The project cost around $1.6 million, with the Delta paying for about half the cost.

While the project originally called for around 260 new spaces, city engineers say that was altered for drainage reasons.

Engineering director Kayla Dixon said some of the space originally considered for the parking lot will be used for storm water management.

“We are managing quantity and quality of storm water off of that parking lot,” Dixon said.

“The hotel has about 90 spaces that are available to them and there are about 105/110 public spaces and some additional on-street parking on the Sleeping Giant Parkway as well.”

The new lot is scheduled to be complete next week. However, staff say the second phase of work on boater parking, is also expected to start soon.
