New roads, trails and other assets focus of new city survey

The city is looking for residents feedback on roads, trails and more through new surveys.

THUNDER BAY — The city's asset management office is asking residents for input on improving the maintenance of city-owned roads, sidewalks and community pathways.

Three new surveys are available for residents that are specifically looking for how safe residents feel when using roads, paths, and bridges and touching on maintenance of these assets and others.

"The information will essentially be compiled and put into key performance indicators that go into our asset management plan so city council [can] look at those key performance indicators and know how citizens feel about the different assets and be able to make informed decisions going forward about how we manage those assets," said Amy Coomes, a project manager for the city's engineering and operations management program.

The surveys will be available until the spring, at which point they will be taken down, and the data will be analyzed, said the project manager.

Information gleaned from responding residents will be available to council to help during the budget process for 2025, Coomes added.

"City council will then look at the asset management plan and hopefully make informed decisions in the 2025 budget about those assets," Coomes said.

In the survey, the questions use information that came from the 2021 asset management plan. The new survey will capture an updated baseline of how residents currently feel regarding road safety, active transportation, traffic and street lighting and more.

The three short surveys are available through the city's Get Involved website, as well as details
