THUNDER BAY — City police are warning residents about threatening text message scams that are now circulating.
In a release from the Thunder Bay Police Service, they are asking the public to be aware of a new text messaging scam that is using aggressive and extortive means for financial gain.
In the release, police state that some local residents have been receiving text messages allegedly sent by the boss of an escort service, threatening possible harm to the recipient and members of their family unless they provide payment.
Police advise that if anyone receives these messages, they should disregard them and not respond or give any form of payment.
The service's economic crime unit urged family members and friends to speak to those who may be vulnerable to being targeted by this type of scam.
Frauds can be reported in many ways, including through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website and Thunder Bay police's cybercrime portal.
