THUNDER BAY – Next year will mark 50 years since the cities of Fort William and Port Arthur amalgamated to form Thunder Bay. The city is wasting no time in recognizing the milestone, with two free events on New Year’s Day to help residents kick off celebrations.
The traditional New Year’s Day Levee held at the O’Kelly Armoury will get a boost this year, with Ontario Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell joining mayor Bill Mauro as host. The event runs 10:30 a.m. to noon, and includes a free pancake breakfast. Attendees will also witness the opening of a time capsule from the city’s 25th anniversary in 1995.
Later in the day, the city will host a skating party at the Fort William Gardens from 1-3 p.m.. In addition to the skate, the event offers persians and kids’ crafts. The first 200 attendees will receive a 50th anniversary scarf. While the event is free, the city will be collecting donations for PRO Kids.
The city has yet to announce details for other major 50th anniversary events.
