THUNDER BAY – A basement fire early on Friday morning forced the evacuation of a multi-unit residence on John Street Road.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, in a release, said no one was injured in the incident, which is believed to be related to an HRV unit in the residence.

Fire crews arrived on scene at about 2:30 a.m. on Friday, encountering smoke in the basement that was making its way into other parts of the home.

The other side of the duplex was immediately evacuated, the homeowner in the affected unit having left because of a working smoke detector.

The home was damaged in the fire and TBFR continues to investigate.
