KENORA – The Thunder Bay North Stars should make trips to Kenora more often.
The Superior International Junior Hockey League club scored double digits for the second straight night and dumped the host Kenora Islanders 11-1 on Saturday night, completing a 24-1 weekend sweep that vaulted them into a tie for top spot in the standings.
Alex Remenda had two goals and two assists to lead the Stars offensively, with singles going to Connor Larrett, Jack Forrester, Evan Simeoni, Peter Forester, Cohen Tangedal, Tyler Jordan, Easton Glousher, Jamieson Franz and Matthew Lysak, who added three helpers for a four-point night.
Ezekiel Kirkness had Kenora’s lone goal, snapping Ben Laurette’s shutout bid at 17:51 of the second period.
The North Stars (6-2-0) won their sixth straight game. Kenora, who fell to 1-6-1, dropped their second straight.
Kam River 5, Sioux Lookout 3: In a bit of revenge for being swept out of last year’s SIJHL championship, the Fighting Walleye completed their weekend sweep in Sioux Lookout. Jett Mintenko scored twice and added an assist for Kam River (5-3-0), who led 4-1 after two periods. Evan Lachimea, Amar Powar and Edwin Lang also had goals for the Walleye. Sam Delaguis, Cedrik Robidoux and Jonah Smith replied for the Bombers (4-3-1).
Fort Frances 3, Ironwood 2: Brady Krentz tied things up at 12:59 of the third and Evan Kabel scored an unassisted marker for the game winner with 30 seconds to go in regulation, ensuring the Lumberjacks remained the only SIJHL team without a win this season. Marshall Thomas scored a pair for Ironwood, outshot 46-24 on home ice. Fort Frances improved to 5-1-1, while the Lumberjacks dropped to 0-7-1.
