THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay North Stars are back in the win column.
The Stars on Saturday got goals from five different players and went on to down the visiting Kam River Fighting Walleye 5-2 at Fort William Gardens, ending the Walleye’s three-game winning streak in the process.
Cameron Dial and E.J. Paddington staked the North Stars to a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Connor Larrett doubled the lead with the only goal of the second, and Beau Helmeczi and Easton Mikus, with his 17th of the season, added empty-netters to put the game away.
Carter Poddubny and Ryan Doucette replied for Kam River (17-4-0).
Keenan Marks stopped 34 shots to earn the win, the North Sars improving to 15-7-3, a point behind Kam River in the Superior International Junior Hockey League standings, tied for third place with the Dryden Ice Dogs (16-8-1).
Red Lake 9, Kenora 0: Ethan Neitsch made 19 saves to record his first shutout of the season and Aiden Corbett scored twice and added three helpers to lead the Miners to a lopsided win over the first-year Islanders.
Dryden 8, Wisconsin 2: Max Roby had two goals and five points to lead the Ice Dogs to victory. McLaren Paulsen had a two-goal, two-assist performance for Dryden, who pulled within a point of top spot in the eight-team circuit.
Sioux Lookout 3, Fort Frances 2: Dayvan Bull broke a 2-2 tie, scoring the only goal of the third period to lead the Bombers past the Lakers. It was Bull’s second goal of the game. Landon Lowes and Brady Krentz replied for Fort Frances (5-14-1).
