North Stars score four straight to edge Miners in overtime

THUNDER BAY – Never count the Thunder Bay North Stars down and out.

The Superior International Junior hockey League club surrendered three goals in a 3:47 span in the first period on Tuesday night, then rallied back with four unanswered goals fo their own to down the visiting Red Lake Miners 4-3 in overtime.

Tyler Jordan netted the winner, his 17th of the season, 6:54 into the extra frame.

It was the fourth straight win for the North Stars, who improved to 15-6-1 and climbed wo within a point of second-place Sioux Lookout.

Things didn’t look promising early on.

Flynn Maxcy started things rolling for the Miners, beating Ben Laurette at 8:31 of the opening period.

Three minutes later Kai Hughes doubled the Red Lake lead, netting his fourth of the season, and then, 38 second after that, Quinn Szpak made it 3-0.

The North Stars comeback began in earnest at 15:18 of the first, when Keagan Jones put the puck past Red Lake goaltender Koen Webber. Easton Glousher closed the gap to one at 13:22 of the second, the lone goal of the period.

Max Buffone sent the game to overtime with his second of the season, the goal coming with 6:38 to go in regulation.

With the loss, the sixth=place Miners dropped to 10-9-3.

Thunder Bay is back in action on Saturday night when they host the first-place Dryden Ice Dogs at Fort William Gardens. Game time is 7:3-0 p.m.
