Norman Trewin said the event was a huge success with 106 cars registered and the parking lot at the Slovak Legion completely full.

THUNDER BAY – Northern Ontario Classic Cruisers held its 24th annual car show on Sunday.

Norman Trewin, secretary of the NOCC car club, said it was a great day with awesome cars.

“We invite local vendors to come and sell their stuff there while our show was going on. Everyone that registers a vehicle gets a voting card and they get to vote for their choices.

“We give trophies to the top 20 in no particular order. Nobody's first, nobody's 20th. Everybody in the top 20 gets a trophy and our sponsor's names are on all the trophies,” he said

Trewin said the event was a huge success with 106 cars registered and the parking lot at the Slovak Legion completely full.

“The parking lot was packed. Cars were parked all on the grass with just spectators. The whole parking lot of the Slovak was packed right out onto the street.

“It's a really fun event. We had a gas guzzler contest where we put a small jug of fuel on a vehicle and you had to guess how long it will run on that fuel,” he said.

The Slovak Legion puts on a breakfast deal in the morning, and then in the afternoon they sell hot dogs, hamburgers and pop.

Trewin said summer is very busy for the club, and there are a variety of events coming up.

“Between July 19 and 21 Machine Nationals in Minneapolis will be happening. And then the Terrace Bay Dragfest between Aug. 2 and 4,” he said.

On Aug. 10 there will be a car show at Fat Guys, supporting George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation.

On Aug. 11, you can expect to see a large assortment of vehicles, many outdoor swap meet vendors, food trucks, live music and trophies and cash prizes at Proctor Car Show and Swap Meet in Proctor, Minnesota.

“There's the BUMS DaVinci, that's the Boreal Ultimate Music Society at the DaVinci. They’re having a car display on Aug. 15.

Atikokan has a car show on Aug. 17, and Nipigon has its Labour Day car show on Aug. 31.

“We have a couple of barbecues and we have events going on for our members - we'll go for a cruise for ice cream. Just something to do during the summer time when we get a chance to take out our cars.

Trewin said to contact haveclassicswillcruise@gmail.com for a membership or visit northernontarioclassiccruisers.com/

“We do not discriminate on type of vehicle or age of vehicle. Our membership is $30 for the year. By the end of the year between prizes that we give out at Christmas and things we give away here, the membership is pretty much free.

“Right now, I think we're right around 65 paid memberships and 90 per cent of them are double, so we have 110 or 120 members right now,” he said.

Trewin said they have a couple of members from out of town, but 99 per cent are from Thunder Bay.

“We're very close with all the other clubs in town and we share information to try to keep everybody out enjoying their rides as much as possible.

“We enjoy the chance to go out with our vehicles and let other people see them,” he said.
