Northwestern Health Unit reports first COVID-19 death

The NWHU said the first death related to COVID-19 was an elderly individual with pre-existing medical conditions.

DRYDEN, Ont. - The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting the first death related to COVID-19 in its catchment area.

The death was confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday. According to the NWHU, the individual was elderly and had pre-existing medical conditions.

Out of respect for the family of the individual, no further details will be released at this time.

“On behalf of all of us at NWHU I would like to convey our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Dr. Kit Young Hoon, Medical Officer of Health of Northwestern Health Unit in a statement.

“I am sorry we have such a tragic reminder of how dangerous COVID-19 is and how much we all need to take measures such as physical distancing, good hand hygiene, and wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces and when physical distancing is a challenge, while we continue to find other ways to support each other and our communities.”

According to the NWHU website, there are currently eight active cases of COVID-19 in the region and there have been 145 total cases to date.
