THUNDER BAY -- Crews from Hydro One locations in Thunder Bay and other northwestern Ontario locations on Friday began the task of helping to restore power to nearly two million homes and businesses in Florida.
The state's power grid was hammered by Hurricane Irma.
Eight lineworkers accompanied by two supervisors drove south this week in six Hydro One trucks, arriving in the sunshine state on Thursday. They are part of a contingent of about 175 Hydro One staff.
The workers from the northwest are beginning their assignment in the Miami area.
The help was requested by Florida Power and Light under a reciprocal arrangement among North American utilities that kicks in when disasters happen. The costs are covered by the utility receiving the help.
A Hydro One spokesperson says the Ontario crews will be in Florida for at least two weeks.
