THUNDER BAY — The federal government has approved grants for several branches of the Royal Canadian Legion in the riding of Thunder Bay - Rainy River.

Funding for the Thunder Bay Slovak branch and branches in Kakabeka Falls, Atikokan and Fort Frances was announced by member of parliament Marcus Powlowski:

  • Thunder Bay Slovak branch - $11,406
  • Kakabeka Falls branch - $11,406
  • Atikokan branch - $11,406
  • Fort Frances branch - $10,709

Declining membership in recent years has forced the closure of numerous legions branches across Canada.

Last November, the government said it would provide the Royal Canadian Legion's Dominion Command with $14 million to cover operational costs at locations across the country.

The first round of funding included Northwestern Ontario branches.

The Veterans Emergency Support Fund is part of the federal COVID-19 Economic Response Plan.

Powlowski said the money will help replace charitable and other revenue lost because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and will help the Legion continue its work with veterans and their families.
