KENORA – The Northwestern Health Unit smashed its single-day case record Saturday, reporting 40 new cases concentrated in its Kenora region.

That doubled the previous single-day record of 20 cases reported Jan. 9.

Of Saturday's cases, 38 were in the NWHU's Kenora region, and one each were in the Sioux Lookout and Dryden/Red Lake regions.

The health unit announced 11 cases the day before, warning residents to remain vigilant, even with the district set to emerge from lockdown into the Yellow-Protect zone in the province's COVID-19 framework on Tuesday.

The Kenora region already accounted for most of the recent spread in the health unit, accounting for 20 of the 22 cases active as of Friday.

The health unit announces new cases, but does not update its other COVID-19 data over the weekend.

There were two district residents in hospital with the virus as of Friday.
