Officer assaulted during recent arrest

The suspect is facing multiple charges including assaulting a peace officer.

THUNDER BAY — A local man has been charged with assaulting a police officer in a recent altercation. 

Responding to a call for service on Tuesday night, officers arrived at an address on Amelia Street West just after 9 p.m.

Officers had received information that the suspect was involved in an altercation with a male victim, allegedly striking the victim in the head with a piece of wood.

The victim was assessed at the scene by paramedics.

A suspect matching the provided description was located nearby and arrested. While being arrested, the suspect allegedly assaulted a police officer.

The 43-year-old city resident was charged with assault, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, breach of recognizance, and failure to comply with a probation order.

The accused appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded into custody with a future court date.
