THUNDER BAY – The Ontario Liberal Party has named its candidate in the Thunder Bay-Atikokan Riding for the upcoming provincial election.
Rob Barrett was acclaimed at a party meeting on April 28 and is excited to give back to the community.
“People have been so kind to me and have given me opportunities that I feel like if I can help create those kinds of opportunities for everybody in Northwestern Ontario, then I’ve done a really good job, and that’s my goal,” said Barrett.
Barrett will take on NDP incumbent Judith Monteith-Farrell, along with Conservative Kevin Holland and the Green Party’s Eric Arner.
“Judith Monteith-Farrell is a very nice woman. She’s very smart. She’s very experienced. And I think Mr. Holland is as well, and so this won’t be an easy race,” said Barrett.
“So we’ll see what happens, and I think what I like about it is everybody’s pretty respectful and we’ll just push our particular platforms and Mr. Del Duca has created one that I can really embrace, and I’m very enthusiastic about that,” said Barrett.
The provincial Liberals have yet to name a Thunder Bay-Superior North candidate in the wake of incumbent Michael Gravelle's announcement Monday that he won't seek re-election because of health concerns.
The Liberals also have not yet named a candidate for Kenora-Rainy River to go against Conservative cabinet minister Greg Rickford or for Kiiwetinoong to face NDP incumbent Sol Mamakwa.
The Ontario election is scheduled for June 2, with the campaign expected to officially begin on May 4.
