One person deceased after encampment fire

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

THUNDER BAY — One person has died following a fire in the Kam River Park encampment area.

On Thursday, the Office of the Fire Marshal confirmed one person had died and two others were injured in the incident that happened early Wednesday morning.

“Investigators with the Office of the Fire Marshal are still on scene conducting the investigation to determine the cause, origin, and circumstance of the fire on Simpson Street, however no cause has been determined,” said a spokesperson with the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the fire in the encampment area around 4 a.m. Firefighters encountered a tent engulfed in flames.

It was originally reported that the fire was extinguished and paramedics took two people to the hospital.
