THUNDER BAY — Three months after Premier Doug Ford promised more work for Thunder Bay's Alstom plant, his minister of transportation is travelling to the city to make an announcement.

Caroline Mulroney will hold a news conference at the plant Tuesday morning.

A government advisory states only that the announcement will be "about jobs and transit."

Mulroney will be joined by Michael Keroullé, the president of Alstom Americas, and by Phil Verster, president and CEO of Metrolinx, the agency that oversees public transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Unifor Local 1075 President Dominic Pasqualino will also attend.

During a visit to the plant in August, Ford told workers "we are going to get more orders, we are going to get more GO trains to be refurbished, because you built them right here."

The plant currently employs about 500 people, which is about half the labour force it's had during peak production.

Unifor officials have stated consistently over the past couple of years that the plant needs major new contracts to become stable and to secure its longer-term future.
