Ontario Northland partners with Thunder Bay Food Bank to "Stuff the Bus"

The goal of the drive was to replenish food stores as the food bank begins its transition from food hampers back to the traditional grocery store-style distribution method

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Food Bank and Ontario Northland partnered to host a “Stuff the Bus” food drive outside of Real Canadian Superstore on Saturday.

“Ontario Northland approached us a few months ago offering to do a one-day food drive to try to stock one of their big, beautiful buses with food to help restock the shelves at the Thunder Bay Food Bank,” said Allison Hill, Board Chair, Thunder Bay Food Bank

The goal of the drive was to replenish food stores as the food bank begins its transition from food hampers back to the traditional grocery store-style distribution method

“Yesterday was our final day of giving out hampers and when we reopen again, the next time we open for our clients, we will have our shelves stocked in the grocery store model instead,” said Hill. “It gives our clients more choice over the food they want to take home to their family.”

The partnership between the two organizations was initiated by Ontario Northland and Hill says that companies stepping up like this is crucial to helping the community.

“It’s so important. We could not exist without community support. We are totally volunteer-driven. We are totally donation driven,” she said. “The only funding we get is from donations or from the United Way and we’re so thrilled when a company like this offers to help us out.”
