THUNDER BAY -- An explosives exercise at the Thunder Bay International Airport is all about public safety and making sure emergency workers are prepared for the real thing the OPP says.
The OPP Explosives Disposal Unit ran a training exercise with local emergency units Wednesday morning. Coordinator Sgt. Dave Wheeler said they want to make sure procedures are in place should an explosive ever end up at the airport.
"How we'd work together with them to make the area safe and just bring the fire, police ambulance, everybody together," he said.
"It's all about establishing these partnerships ahead of time."
If a threat was detected, local emergency officials would confirm that it was real and where the explosive was. They'd then call in the explosives disposal unit while a safe area for the public was set up.
"To make sure the public is protected," Wheeler said.
