ORILLIA, Ont., -- Ontario Provincial Police have assigned an investigative unit to follow up on all tips in Ontario after receiving numerous reports from across the province of suspicious vehicles and possible sightings of Kam McLeod, and Bryer Schmegelsky.
Police are clarifying with citizens of the province that there have been no confirmed sighting of the two B.C. males believed to be the British Columbia homicide suspects in Ontario.
The report comes after OPP received a tip on Wednesday morning about a small white car driving through a construction zone on Highway11 in Kapuskasing, Ont., more than 2,300 kilometres southeast of the fugitives’ last known location in Gillam, Man.
Police say they’ve received dozens of reports from Kapuskasing, Iron Bridge, Cochrane and Sudbury.
“The OPP continues to work with members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and has assigned an investigative team, under the direction of Detective Inspector Matt Watson, Criminal Investigation Branch to follow up on all tips received,” an OPP press release issued Friday morning reads.
Schmegelsky, 18, and McLeod, 19, are wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese.
A burned-out truck was then found with the body of Leonard Dyck, of Vancouver, southwest of the scene of the double homicide. Police believe the cases are connected.
Earlier this week, Manitoba RCMP said they were paring down search efforts in Manitoba after spending more than a week scouring the province following a confirmed sighting in Gillam, Man.
The OPP are reminding members of the public to be vigilant of their personal safety at all times and to call police if the pair are observed, as the two suspects are considered dangerous.
