OPP issue apology for wording in press release of fatal crash

THUNDER BAY — Provincial police have issued an apology for the wording of a press release that was issued to provide details of a fatal highway crash that occurred last week.

The OPP issued the apology on Thursday, nearly a week after the collision involving a snowplow and tractor trailer happened on Dec. 2 on Highway 102.

In the updated press release, police addressed the previous wording that "may have appeared to infer that the snowplow initiated the contact with the tractor trailer." Police said the identity of an "at fault" vehicle has not been released.

The two-vehicle crash happened when a westbound snowplow that was actively plowing and the eastbound transport collided.

Police said the identity of the 52-year-old snowplow driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is not being released at the request of the family.

The OPP's traffic incident management and enforcement team and collision reconstructionists are still investigating and have not yet released who was responsible for the crash, police said.
