NIPIGON, Ont. -- OPP officers in Nipigon and Schreiber are staging their annual crackdown on impaired driving.
The Festive R.I.D.E program began in the two communities on Nov. 18 and will continue through Jan. 2, with officer conducting stops throughout their detachment areas in search of drivers under the influence during the holiday season.
The goal is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on Ontario highways caused by drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol.
"Impaired driving continues to be a serious issue on Ontario roads. Every year, the OPP investigates a significant number of fatal motor vehicle collisions that are attributed to alcohol / drug-impaired drivers. Drivers need to remember that any amount of alcohol or drugs can impair one's ability to drive," reads a release issued on Friday by the OPP.
"If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan not to drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi, stay overnight or stay home."
Anyone suspecting someone is driving or about to drive impaired by alcohol and/or drugs is asked to phone 911 to report.
