MARATHON, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police officers are now working out of a new detachment building in Marathon.

The 18 officers as well as about half a dozen civilian staff officially moved to the new location on Peninsula Road on Wednesday.

It's a much larger building than the previous location, which was a building owned by the Town of Marathon and shared with the fire department.

Quarters were rather cramped, according to an OPP spokesperson.

Construction of the new detachment began in the spring of 2019 and was completed on Sept. 1, 2020 despite some hurdles posed by Canadian Shield bedrock, fine beach sand and a marshy area.

After some finishing touches were made, and office furniture and other items were installed, the radio, telephone and computer systems were officially changed over on Wednesday.
