OPSEU members protest pay freeze

Local members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union say a proposed wage freeze on public sector wages by the province is a ploy to pad the profits of corporations.

Local members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union say a proposed wage freeze on public sector wages by the province is a ploy to pad the profits of corporations.

OPSEU members protested the mandatory wage freeze outside Thunder Bay’s city hall Monday night. Owen Smith, an employee of Confederation College, said their members wanted to inform city council what a public sector wage freeze would mean for Thunder Bay.

Smith said many public sector employees could make more in the private sector.

Despite the wage freeze announced by the McGuinty government, about 16,000 unionized nurses and hospital workers were recently awarded pay raises by an arbitrator.
