THUNDER BAY – An Oshawa man who shot at a moose decoy seven times from a vehicle and while standing on the road has received a $7,500 fine and a one-year hunting licence suspension.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers were conducting a moose decoy operation on Camp Road 45 north of Thunder Bay last October.
The moose decoy was situated on a commonly used forestry road where conservation officers controlled traffic in the vicinity of the operation.
The hunter shot at the moose decoy seven times with a high-powered rifle, both from the vehicle and while standing on the road.
Eugenio Filippo pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
He received $7,500 in fines and a one-year hunting licence suspension.
Filippo will also have to complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course before purchasing another hunting licence.
Justice of the Peace Bruce Leaman heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Thunder Bay, on April 7, 2021.
The Ontario government wants to remind hunters that shooting from a vehicle or down a road is both dangerous and illegal.
