THUNDER BAY — An outdoor farmers market will be gracing Red River Road this weekend.
Amidst the ongoing construction that is taking place in the north core, Goods and Co. is hosting an outdoor market with loads of local vendors on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The market is a way to feature many local food and farm vendors, including Belluz Farms, Sleepy G Farm, George's Market, The Bakeshop on Boundry and many more, according to Goods and Co. owner Maelyn Hurley.
"We'll have roughly 25 to 30 farmers and food producers set up on Red River Road," said Hurley.
"This is kind of a nice way to bring the community into the downtown core to obviously not only support the event but the businesses that are down here as well."
While there is ongoing construction happening along Court Street at Red River Road, pedestrians are still able to get across to the market on Sunday.
Even though this is an opportunity to showcase many local food growers and providers, it's also a fundraiser for Roots Community Food Centre.
Executive Director of the not-for-profit, Erin Beagle, says she hopes the event can raise $5,000, "Funding from this will go towards our employment programs for young people at our, volunteer pool and Lily Street Farm where we employ folks from the age of 16 all the way up to 30 for support of employment."
Beagle noted that they pay a living wage to their employees, "We always have to find that difference between the minimum wage and living wage. And right now, the living wage in Thunder Bay is calculated at $19.70 an hour. Events like this really help to bridge that gap so that people can go home with a living wage."
