THUNDER BAY -- Outdoor swimming pools and all supervised beaches in Thunder Bay are now open.

The City of Thunder Bay on Friday announced that Art Widnall Pool and Health Park Pool, along with Boulevard Lake and Sandy Beach at Chippewa Park are operational, allowed under Step 1 of the province's reopening plan.

“We are excited to announce that our pools and beaches will be back in operation this summer,” said Calli Graham, supervisor of aquatics, wellness, children and youth.

“Our facilities provide an enjoyable space for people in our community to get outdoors, cool off and have some fun.”

The city says the public should expect some changes to operations. To use an outdoor pool, an appointment must be booked ahead of time, either by stopping by in person of phoning the pool. There will be strict capacity limits in place due to COVID-19.

Pool users are also being asked to arrive ready to swim in their bathing attire, as change facilities remain closed until further notice and guidance from public health.

When visiting one of the supervised beaches, residents are asked to adhere to the signs, use the designated entry and exit locations, and follow all public health guidelines including physical distancing.

The city also announced changes that will be enacted under Step 2, which also includes the planned return of Live on the Waterfront, the city's annual outdoor concert series. Further details are expected to be announced soon. Under provincial rules, in Step 2, outdoor gatherings for public events are limited to 25 people.

Fort William Stadium will also reopen for bookings and indoor weddings, at 25 per cent capacity, will also be allowed.
