UPDATE: One pedestrian dies after Cumberland Street collision

THUNDER BAY – One person has died and another is in serious condition after a vehicle struck two pedestrians on Monday at around 10:30 p.m. on Cumberland Street.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that one person was pronounced deceased at hospital and the other remains in hospital with serious injuries that are considered life threatening.

According to a witness who arrived on scene shortly after the late Monday evening incident, an SUV collided with the pedestrians. Police have said the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Debris, including a backpack, remains scattered on the asphalt, while police conduct their investigation. 

The witness said he stopped to provide assistance to the victims while waiting for emergency crews to arrive on scene. 

The Traffic Unit, along with the Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification, are now involved in the ongoing investigation, a news release said.
