THUNDER BAY — With the minority governing Liberals retaining the support of the NDP, there's no indication that a federal election is imminent.

But the leader of the right-wing People's Party of Canada is preparing for the next campaign nonetheless, saying an election could come "at any time."

Maxime Bernier will travel to Thunder Bay on Thursday as part of a tour of Northern Ontario.

He'll speak at 7:00 pm at the Murillo Community Hall.

In a news release announcing the visit, the party maintained that support for it has climbed sharply over the past year.

"We received almost one million votes in the last election, but this is only the beginning," Bernier said in a statement.

The PPC received 840,000 votes, or 4.9 per cent of the vote total, but won no seats in the 2021 election.

Its candidates in Thunder Bay-Superior North and Thunder Bay-Rainy River received, respectively, six per cent and seven per cent of the votes cast in those  ridings.

On Bernier's current tour, he's already made stops in North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

After his visit to Thunder Bay, he'll host events in Timmins, Iroquois Falls and Temiskaming Shores.
