SHUNIAH — Fire crews responded to a call for service at a home in Shuniah.
Just before 9 a.m. on Friday, Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services attended a home on Trowbridge Road.
Responding firefighters saw smoke coming from the eavestrough, and the windows were blacked out from smoke inside the residence.
Once firefighters entered the home, they searched for occupants and worked to extinguish the flames that were originating from the laundry and electrical room.
Firefighters had the blaze under control and declared out by 11 a.m.
While there were no human occupants in the home at the time of the fire, a dog and two cats died.
Ten Shuniah Fire crew members responded to the call, along with five firefighters from Pass Lake and support from Superior North EMS, OPP and Hydro One.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Shuniah Fire is reminding the public to have working smoke alarms and that all members of a home know an escape plan in the event of an emergency.
