THUNDER BAY – A pickleball tournament was held on Saturday with nearly double the turnout of the last one.

Pickleball is considered Thunder Bay’s fastest growing sport - something the local club said is demonstrated by the attendance at its Easter Tournament this weekend, which featured more than 100 players.

“It's actually unbelievable. It's called the Easter Battle. First time that we've ever had an Easter tournament,” said Jason Horychuk, head coach with the the Thunder Bay Pickleball Club

“We have 110 people in this. We were expecting, you know, 50 or 60 for the weekend - so it's a big tournament.”

The players were broken up by skill level from novice to advanced and Horychuk said its great to see so many people giving the sport a try.

“The new players are coming out, we're running clinics and lessons, they're getting challenged by coming into tournaments, giving it a shot. There's lots of pairings, lots of family pairings, lots of couples,” he said. “We have the youth, all generations are playing today.”
