The developers of a new all-electric pickup truck say the vehicle is built for Canada's tough weather conditions and challenging terrain.

Havelaar Canada unveiled the truck on Tuesday as "a good news story for Ontario's auto manufacturing sector and for prospective pickup truck owners."

The Bison, which was designed and tested in Canada,  made its debut at the Electric Mobility Canada conference and trade show in Markham.

It can travel 300 km on a single charge, and features all-wheel drive, a carbon fibre reinforced steel frame and an advanced dual-motor powertrain.

The company says the Bison's off-road capabilities allow for 54% hill start and 21% hill climb at full load.

In a news release, it boasts about its bold design "punctuated with angular cladding and wedge profiles," and that with short overhangs and tires pushed to the corners, "the stance conveys stability and confidence."

Pricing information was not immediately available.

Havelaar and the University of Toronto last year launched a partnership research centre which the company says focuses on transformative powertrain, energy management and autonomous driving technologies to increase electric vehicle efficiency, safety, comfort and lifetime, and reduce system costs.
