Polar bear statues revitalized

Sculptures welcomed visitors to the now closed Chippewa Wildlife Park for more than three decades.

THUNDER BAY – A pair of dilapidated polar bears guarding the entrance to the former Chippewa Wildlife Exhibit have been brought to life.

A community group, calling itself iCare Thunder Bay, recently restored the concrete sculptures, which were first presented to the City of Thunder Bay 35 years ago by sculptor Zbigniew Gajda.

The organization is challenging residents to take on similar projects elsewhere in the city, encouraging them to take before and after photos and post them to social media, including the iCare Thunder Bay Facebook page.
