THUNDER BAY – Police have arrested a Thunder Bay man in connection with a stabbing that took place in the city’s north end early Thursday morning.
Injuries to the victim were not believed to be life-threatening, the Thunder Bay Police Service indicated.
Police officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the zero-to-100 block of Cumberland Street South around 3:40 a.m., locating and arresting a suspect without incident within 10 minutes.
Police named the accused as Felton Earl Sakanee, 35, who was previously convicted of manslaughter in the 2014 death of Lloyd Oskineegish.
An investigation indicated the victim and the accused, two males who were known to each other, had been conversing outside before the stabbing occurred.
Police described the stabbing as an unprovoked assault that occurred without warning as the pair were parting ways.
Paramedics with Superior North EMS transported the victim to the regional hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Sakanee was taken into custody and is charged with assault with a weapon and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.
In 2016, Sakanee received a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2014 death of 44-year-old Lloyd Oskineegish in the Field Street area.
Sakanee had been one of six suspects originally charged with second-degree murder.
He was subsequently convicted on two separate assault charges in 2019, including one involving a city bus driver.
Sakanee appeared in bail court on Thursday, and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
