THUNDER BAY – One woman is dead and another 21-year-old woman has been charged in her murder in relation to the death.
Thunder Bay Police said they were called an apartment complex at the corner of Dawson and Algoma streets at about 2 p.m., where they found a female victim of what appeared to be a recent assault. Emergency crews attempted to revive the woman, but paramedics declared her dead on the scene.
Police say shortly after they arrived on scene, the 21-year-old accused was located and taken into custody.
Thunder Bay Police Service’s major crimes division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and say it’s being treated as a homicide.
It’s the seventh homicide in Thunder Bay in 2020, matching last year’s total for all of 2019.
The accused is set to appear in bail court on Saturday to face homicide charges.
Police will not release the name of the accused until she appears in court. The victim’s name has also not been released, pending notification of next-of-kin.
Police say neighbours can expect a police presence to remain in the area while the investigation is ongoing.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were dispatched to a residential address in the 300 block of Dawson Street following reports of a serious assault just before 2 p.m. on Friday, June 19.
Paramedics with the Superior North EMS were also dispatched to the address due to reports of an individual having sustained serious, and possibly life-threatening, injuries.
When officers arrived they located a female who appeared to be the victim of a recent assault.
Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Shortly after arriving on scene officers located and arrested a suspect, a 21-year-old woman, and transported her to the TBPS headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street.
Members of the TBPS’s Major Crimes Unit are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The case is being treated as a homicide.
Both victim and accused were known to one another.
The accused is scheduled to appear in bail court on Saturday, June 20 and is expected to face homicide charges. Police are withholding the identity of the accused until charges are sworn in by the courts.
No other details are known at this time.
A police presence is likely to remain in the area as the investigation continues.
