UPDATE: Police investigating standoff on Picton, ask public to stay away

Police said they were called to the area after it was alleged a male pointed a firearm at another person.

THUNDER BAY -- City police say they are investigating an ongoing standoff in the 100 block of Picton Avenue and are asking the public to avoid the area at this time.

Police say they were first called to the scene on Thursday night at about 10 p.m. after receiving reports of a firearms incident. Police say the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at another person and a subsequent investigation led them to identify a suspect and the residence to which the person likely fled.

An area surrounding the grey, two-storey home was contained and efforts are being made to locate the male suspect in question.

Some nearby residents were evacuated for safety precautions.

The public is being asked to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.

As a precaution, Hammarskjold High School has been placed in a hold-and-secure status.
