THUNDER BAY — City police say they have become aware of multiple complaints involving possible threats against people tied to a series of demonstrations in the area of a south side gym.
The Thunder Bay Police Service issued a news release Tuesday afternoon, saying they are investigating the complaints.
The complaints centre around a series of demonstrations by a small group of residents opposing a local gym’s policies allowing transgender members to use the change room of their choice, as well as a number of counter-protests organized by members of the local LGBTQ+ community
"The Thunder Bay Police Service respects people’s right to demonstrate and protest peacefully," police said. "When behaviour becomes criminal, police will investigate. When appropriate, charges will be laid."
"During active demonstrations, police will work to ensure all people in our community are safe from threats, assaults, intimidation, and the inciting of hate or violence."
Police presence at demonstrations is meant to ensure people feel safe to exercise their rights without harassment and discrimination, the service added.
The police service is encouraging anyone who believes they may have been the victim of a crime to come forward and make a formal report.
