Police investigating May Street South murder

Shane Franklin Kruchak, 47, arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

THUNDER BAY - A 35-year-old Thunder Bay man is dead in Thunder Bay's sixth homicide of 2021.

Thunder Bay Police say they were called to a lane way in the 200 block area of May Street South at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday following reports of a man in need of emergency medical attention following a physical altercation.

Police say they arrived to find a man suffering injuries consistent with a stabbing. He was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Later, a male suspect was located and arrested , and taken to Thunder Bay Police headquarters on Balmoral Street.

Shane Franklin Kruchak, 47, of Thunder Bay has been charged with second-degree murder and breach of probation. Police have not yet revealed the victim's name.  They noted the victim and the alleged assailant were known to each other.

The major crimes unit and forensic identification unit are involved in the ongoing investigation.

Police say that though the area is known to have drug activity, the incident did not appear to be drug related.

"So for the sake of the community and everything that we've been doing lately, I can acknoledge that yes , we have previously been to that address and reported that we've done drug warrants in that area. This particular one appeared to just be not quite drug related to persons that knew eachother and unfortunately, got into a bit of a dispute." said Detective Inspector John Fennell.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place in Thunder Bay on Monday. The accused is expected to appear in bail court on Sunday.

Anyone with information that could assist this investigation is asked to call police at 684-1200, or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.p3tips.com.
