THUNDER BAY — Police and health care workers have observed a spike in overdose cases in the city and are issuing a community safety alert.
According to a media release issued by the Thunder Bay Police Service late Friday afternoon, officers and heath care workers have “witnessed an apparent spike in drug overdose cases that require health-care intervention or hospitalization.”
“This is a real-time situation and therefore no statistics are available, but the anecdotal observations from frontline police and health-care workers gives us reason to believe that street drugs with increased toxicity are now in circulation,” the release reads.
Police are advising anyone using street drugs to never do so alone and to have a Naloxone kit readily available in case of an overdose.
Someone who experiences an overdose is advised to seek medical attention. Police are also reminding the public that Naloxone may not always reverse the effects of an overdose and using street drugs does carry significant risks.
Anyone concerned about drug use in an area of the city is encouraged to call the Thunder Bay Police Service at 684-1200 or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com.
