THUNDER BAY — Police have arrested one man as they continue to investigate a shooting incident that took place in the Westfort area on Tuesday afternoon.
That investigation has officers to believe the shooting was a "targeted incident," the Thunder Bay Police Service said in a release on Tuesday evening.
Officers were first called to the 200 block of Amelia Street West just before 1 p.m. after receiving reports of an altercation involving firearms.
Multiple parties with firearms were involved in the incident that's now under investigation by the Major Crimes Unit, police said.
Police blocked off Amelia Street between Brown and Heath streets. Access to Spence Court was also blocked off, with police evidence markers scattered throughout the parking lot on the east side of the building.
Thunder Bay police said they had also received support from the Ontario Provincial Police in responding to the incident.
Several nearby schools — Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Westmount and Kingsway Park public schools, and St. Martin School — were all placed in hold and secure protocols. Those have since been lifted. The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board said police have confirmed that the area is safe.
No information has been made available about whether anybody was injured.
The suspect in the case, who police did not name, is set to appear in bail court on Wednesday.
Anyone who may have information or footage relating to the incident is encouraged to contact police at (807) 684-1200, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or visit www.p3tips.com.
