Police Service to continue 12-hour shifts for at least one more year

THUNDER BAY – The majority of officers with the city police service will be working 12 hour shifts for at least one more year.

THUNDER BAY – The majority of officers with the city police service will be working 12 hour shifts for at least one more year.

The Thunder Bay Police Services Board formally approved extending the 12-hour shift scheduling pilot project for one more year at their meeting on Tuesday.

The police service and the association representing officers began a one-year trial period for the longer days at the start of 2014. Once again both sides will have the option to end the schedule at the end of the year.

One of the biggest changes will see the tactical unit adopt the model, providing the force with more flexibility.

“That will enhance our ability to train our uniform people. The tactical unit can cover the road while we’re able to take uniform strength off the road and put them in training situations,” Levesque said.

That leaves officers within the Criminal Investigations Branch and members of the Community Services Branch as the only departments who still operate on either an eight or 10-hour schedule.
