Police services board announces two new members

Wayne Bahlieda, who has previously served on the Thunder Bay Police Services Board between 2001 and 2010 has been named the second provincial appointee, while city counsellor Kasey Etreni will be taking over the municipal seat left after Shelby Ch’ng announced she was stepping down

THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Police Services Board is at a full complement of members after two new appointees were named.

On Wednesday, the police services board announced Wayne Bahlieda as the second provincial appointee and city councillor Kasey Etreni is set to fill the third municipal seat after Shelby Ch’ng announced she was stepping down from the board to pursue a master’s degree.

“We are pleased to be making this announcement, having now filled all the vacant positions on the Board,” said board chair Karen Machado. “We welcome Wayne and Kasey to the Board. Wayne’s experience on the Board and Kasey’s work within the community and on council will be beneficial as we move ahead with our mandate to serve the community and continue the work that is already underway.”

Bahlieda has 40 years experience working in the health care, education, natural resources, and mental health sectors and has previously served as a member of the Police Services Board from 2003 to 2010. He also served on the Ontario Police Arbitration Commission from 2003 to 2013.

“I am honoured to be selected as the Provincial appointee to sit on the Thunder Bay Police Services Board,” Bahlieda said. “As a member of the Board, I am committed to working in collaboration with the leadership team to attain organizational success and have a positive impact on our stakeholders, and the broader community.”

The provincial appointee was the final position to fill on the police services board following the resignation of the majority of board members in April 2022 after an administrator was appointed to oversee the board.

The board consists of three municipal appointees and two provincial appointees. Etreni will be filling the last municipal spot after Ch’ng announced she would be stepping down from the board on Monday.

“I am eager to bring my experience from both council and my professional career to the Board and apply it to the work that is already underway and the work that needs to be done,” Etreni said. “I am keen and honoured to serve the residents of the Thunder Bay community in both capacities.”

The police services board is scheduled to meet next on Sept. 19.
