Boots and paws were on the ground at city hall Monday evening to protest the destruction of Jimi the dog.
Around 50 people and their four-legged friends were at city hall braving the blowing snow with signs in hand saying "Save Jimi" and "An eye for an eye makes the world blind". Protest organizer Lawrence Hurd said the group wants to raise awareness for Jimi and gain the support of the public at large.
"Hopefully prevent the needless destruction of poor Jimi here," Hurd said.
The message was also aimed at animal services’ manager Ron Bourret. Hurd said Jimi is being put down on the erroneous assumption that the dog is a pitbull when his adoption papers say he is a border collie cross.
"We’d like Bourret to reconsider moving forward," Hurd said.
Hurd said the group would rather see Jimi restrained with muzzle and leash than be destroyed. He said more and more people are supporting that alternative. Hurd offered his condolences to the Perrier family, the owners of "Gus" a dog killed by Jimi at a dog park earlier this month.
"I think they see the injustice in all of this," he said. "An eye for an eye is not the approach here."
