THUNDER BAY — The Port Arthur Curling Club will start the next curling season with a new name and its first-ever female president.

The organization's board of directors has decided to change its name to the Port Arthur Curling Centre, saying this shows its commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for curlers and community members of all backgrounds.

In an announcement Wednesday, PACC said it champions equity and diversity, and described the rebranding effort as a significant step in its evolution to embrace "a new era that welcomes all."

It also revealed Kelly Latoski as its first-ever female president, calling her appointment a landmark moment for the 136-year-old facility and promising that she will bring a fresh perspective to the role.

"Embracing change is at the heart of the Port Arthur Curlng Centre," Latoski said. "We are making a statement... Together, we will work to create a curling centre that reflects the true diversity of our community. We are proud to break barriers and welcome individuals from all walks of life to experience what curling has to offer."

The organization added in a statement that her appointment denotes a significant stride towards gender equality, and serves as an inspiration to young curlers, particularly female and gender-diverse individuals, who may wish to pursue leadership positions in the sport.

PACC reopens for the new season on Aug. 9.
