A strong December should help the port handle more than 10-million tonnes of grain in 2020, for the first time since 1997.

THUNDER BAY – The Port of Thunder Bay is anticipating a strong finish to the current shipping season.

According to a release issued on Thursday, monthly shipments in November were above average, with more than a million tonnes of grain loaded at the Thunder Bay elevators.

The release says an increased demand for Canadian grain in Europe, the Middle East and Africa has led to a 20-year high for tonnage.

In November, the port was visited by 32 domestic lake-going vessels, one American lake-going vessel and 20 foreign sea-going vessels, which carry cargo directly overseas.

Looking forward, with a strong vessel lineup in December, the Port of Thunder Bay projects cargo volumes will top 10 million tonnes for the first time since 1997, a 14 per cent increase over its five-year average.
