THUNDER BAY -- Lakehead Public Schools says they've been notified that an individual associated with Kingsway Park Public School has tested positive for COVID-19.
The board on Saturday said the Thunder Bay District Health Unit is also taking a precautionary approach with two other possible exposures within the school.
"At this time, there is no evidence that the virus has spread in the school setting. We know this news may be unsettling. Please know that your child's safety is our number one priority and we are working closely with the TBDHU to keep our school community safe," the board said in a letter to parents.
The health unit and the school board are working together to determine further exposures, including both in the school and any related settings, including school bus transportation.
"Individuals in the same classroom or cohort, and some or all individuals with the same bus transportation, are considered close contacts. Parents or caregivers of students in the impacted class/cohort will be contacted directly by a public health nurse and given instructions about what they need to do. Similarly, public health nurses will also be contacting directly any teachers, staff, visitors or any others who are impacted," said Dr. Janet DeMille, medical officer of health at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, in a letter to parents.
The board has not said whether it's staff members or students involved.
At this time, the case is not considered an outbreak as there is no evidence the virus has spread in the south-side school.
Anyone deemed a close contact will have to stay home and won't be allowed to return until given the OK by public health.
A full investigation is under way and staff, students and parents will be updated over the next few days. Further information can be found on the board website.
