THUNDER BAY — A portable propane heater left unattended in the back of a cube van started a fire outside a North Edward Street convenience store on Wednesday.

Nobody was hurt but the truck, which was loaded with potato chips, sustained extensive damage.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said the driver was inside the Circle K store at the time.

Although the truck was only two meters away from the building, firefighters were able to knock the fire down before it could spread to the structure.

The fire department issued a reminder that portable heaters using combustible fuels should only be used in well-ventilated areas, and should be properly attended while in use.

It also said heaters should never be used in close  proximity to highly flammable objects.
